In 2019, thirty-seven years since starting this series on Japanese parents and children, I had an opportunity to exhibit them in America, the country where I was born and raised. Photoville Festival is a large outdoor venue which introduces new and unique works to the New York photo community. I was exciting to meet many people there who felt a strong connection with the families in the photos. It reconfirmed my belief that regardless of race, religion, or culture, some things are universal.

While I do not claim to be authority on the long and evolving field of photography, I would like to share the path that lead me to my lifelong project of OYAKO (parents and children) and where it has taken me.

— From Los Angeles to Japan—

I was in my twenties when I left on a trip to Japan with two friends. Instead of taking a direct route, we decided to go the long way and took a flight from Los Angeles to London in 1976. A couple of weeks into the journey, we bought a used Volkswagen van and drove from the northern part of Europe to the southern tip of Greece. It was my first time to travel outside of North America and it ended up taking two months to complete this leg of the trip. After selling our van, we traveled by public transportation through Turkey, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Along the way, both of my friends ended up returning to the States as I continued traveling in India for the next 3 months, followed by a couple more in Nepal, Burma and Thailand, I finally arrived to Japan in the summer of 1977 and vividly remember the excitement along with the relief of being in a culture I felt was much closer to my home country. As I was wandering through Asia, I had been unaware of the latest fashions and surprised to hear the new aggressive beat of Punk Rock music along with the carefree sounds of Disco. Tokyo was super charged with creative energy and it didn’t take long to be captivated by this city. After staying in Japan for about half a year, I returned to the United States and began working as the photo editor at Phonographic Record Magazine taking photo of bands and going to clubs, however I still had my sights set on returning to Japan. In March 1980, I had an opportunity to exhibit at the Konishi Roku Photo Gallery in Nihonbashi. With the cooperation of my friends in Los Angeles, I created the works for my “La Fantasy Trilogy” show in Tokyo.

For the La Fantasy exhibition, I shot a series of portraits of Tomata du Plenty, the lead vocalist for the punk band the Screamers and gave one print each to 15 artists. The artworks they created were busting out with new wave energy. The prints were big surprise for the gallery staff when saw them, but they were thrilled by the number of people who came to see the show. This photo is the collaboration with graphic artist, John Van Hamersveld.

Art Center College of Design の前に College of the Pacific で アートを専攻したのが役立ちました。

— The thrill of new challenges —

Having made so many contacts during the exhibition, I wanted to stay longer in Japan. During my flight to Los Angeles, I decided this was the time and three months later I was back. My studio and residence was in Asakusa, the downtown part of Tokyo. It was the prefect location to begin learning about my new home and I got to know many vaudevillians and other old-time entertainers who performed in small clubs there.

My first assignment was for Ryukotsushin (Fashion News) and I was given complete control over the direction, including the set design and styling for the photographs. It felt very similar to the way I had been working when I photographed musicians in LA, but this time it was for a high fashion magazine. Prior to entering Art Center College of Design, I majored in art at the University of the Pacific and painting along with make the sets for the photographs were part of my creative process.

— The fun of creating as a team –

One of the benefits of being a photographer is the opportunity to meet interesting people, especially when working for magazines. Taking portraits are unique moments to talk one-to-one with the subject while looking through the lens. A different type of collaboration is working on a combined project with another artist. Creating as a team brings out results beyond one’s own imagination. It was particularly true when I was a doing project with film director Sion Sono. We were looking for interesting locations in the city to post his poems; projected on large monitor at a busy intersection, on a school playground where children were playing, and written on a window overlooking the city. We were challenging each other to come up with new ideas.

―Japanese culture seen from parent and child photographs―

S-KEN, a music producer and musician was editing a magazine about punk culture and asked me to take photos for it. One of the subjects was going to be Shigeru Nakano, the vocalist of hard-core band Anarchy. It was at a moment when I was about to become a parent and I hit on the idea of taking this rocker with his mother. I had no idea at the time this was the start of my lifelong project OYAKO. Shortly afterwards, I joined a group of artists planning a gallery space in Roppongi. NEWZ!
Gallery had 24 members and each of us could have a two week show once a year. It was an interesting mix of different creators including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Katsuhiko Hibino, Pater Sato, Taeko Onuki, and Masayuki Yui. For my first show, I decided to take pictures of parents and children I thought symbolized Japanese culture, i.e., monks, tattooists, carpenters, geisha, and tea masters. Focusing on the relationship between the parent and child, I didn’t want to have any other distractions. I decided to photograph each family the same way with black & white film against a white background.

– Birth of “Parent and Child Day –

The exhibition at NEWZ! was the beginning of many OYAKO shows including Seed Hall, Kirin Plaza Osaka, Tamagawa Takashimaya, and 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa. The OYAKO images had gotten a lot of attention in the media and from the people who went to see the shows and I felt it had become much more than my personal photo project. My wife and I wanted to share this theme with a larger audience and in 2003 we founded OYAKO Day social action. Every year on the 4th Sunday of July, one hundred groups of parents and children are invited to the studio and I take their photos in an all day photo session. This year marks the 19th year and other photographers and organizations have started doing their own OYAKO Day events. Hopefully it will continue to grow and spread to other countries. Something I thought about while working on this project was how the Japanese language defines the parent and child relationship in one word. OYAKO is composed of the 2 characters, OYA, which is parent, and KO child. I feel it reflects the Japanese philosophy that we are connected and I really agree. The parents are the link to the family’s past and the child, a bridge to the future. Together they represent the past, present, future for their family.

-Finding new possibilities-

In 2003, I moved from Tokyo to the beachside community of Hayama. Being in a new location, opens the doors to new experiences and I started beach combing. In addition to picking up driftwood and shells, also collected bottles, cans, beach sandals, and other manmade trash that wash up on the shore. Other items include the inner core of dissolved dry cell batteries, along with disposable lighters and other plastics which do not decompose. These artifacts are microcosm our modern society and examples of the impact that we are having on the environment. Brought back to the studio, they are the subjects of my latest series, NATURE CALLS. Beach combing started off as playful activity, before my growing concerns about man’s footprint on nature.

―EAST MEETS WEST―

―EAST MEETS WEST―

If I had to contemplate my 40 years since coming to Japan, I would summarize it by the simple expression of EAST MEETS WEST. I arrived to Japan in 1980 on the wave of a rebellious punk movement, but in the time I have been here, my life has become a mixture of Eastern and Western cultures. As Chair of the Exhibition Committee at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan (FCCJ) for the last 10 years, I have curated over 120 shows of Japanese and foreign artists. Regarding my own work, recently I am having more opportunities to introduce my photography overseas. The digital communication is making distances feel much closer and I want to enjoy the future by letting my curiosity guide me between what’s happening in the East and the West.
